Hangul, Romanization, and Pronunciation

Learn how Hangul and romanization work together when reading and sharing Korean names.

Hangul is the main writing system

Hangul is the standard way to write Korean. It is phonetic, which means it shows how words are pronounced. For Korean names, Hangul is usually more reliable than English spelling because English letters can be pronounced in many different ways.

A generated name should always include Hangul. Without it, the romanized spelling can be ambiguous.

Romanization is a reading aid

Romanization writes Korean sounds with Latin letters. It helps people who do not yet read Hangul, but it is not perfect. The same Korean syllable can appear in slightly different romanized forms depending on the system or personal preference.

For example, the sound written as 어 can be romanized as eo. At first, this may look unfamiliar to English speakers, but it is a common way to represent the Korean vowel.

Pronunciation matters

When choosing a Korean-style name, say it slowly and listen to the syllables. Korean names are usually not stressed the same way English names are. Each syllable tends to be clear and relatively even.

If the name includes sounds that are difficult for you, practice with the Hangul form rather than relying only on English spelling. This helps you learn the name closer to its Korean pronunciation.

Use all three forms together

The most helpful Korean name format includes Hangul, romanization, and meaning. Hangul gives the authentic written form, romanization helps beginners read it, and the meaning explains why the name was chosen.

Hangulify provides these pieces together so you can compare names with more confidence.
